In 1954, Rolex released the GMT Master, a special pilot's watch designed specifically with Pan-Am airline pilots in mind. For 2022, the Rolex GMT Master II 126710BLOR carries the flame for the world's most famous series travel time wristwatches. This episode discusses the 2022 Rolex GMT Master II "Pepsi" bezel variant that hues closest to the original Rolex 6542 of the 1950s. Tim Mosso presents a comprehensive buyer's guide for watch collectors interested in owning the latest Rolex GMT.
The 2018 redesign of the Rolex GMT Master II brought with it the return of the previously discontinued blue-and-red bezel with a stainless steel case. In 2021, Rolex updated the steel model to include the Oyster bracelet option alongside the Jubilee. All examples of the current GMT Master are 40mm in diameter, and equipped with either gold, steel, or steel-gold hardware. Each example features an external bi-directional calculator bezel that an be used to calculate a third time zone. The bezel insert is crafted from ceramic for longevity, and the calibrations on the insert are treated with platinum for high contrast and sharpness.
Each of the current GMT Master models employs a Rolex automatic caliber 3285 for reliable and accurate timekeeping. The power reserve of 70 hours is matched with COSC-certified chronometer precision. Rolex cases the chronometer movement and tests to tolerances of +2/-2 per 24 hours. Hacking seconds, two independent time zones, and robust anti-magnetic qualities round out the remaining features. Each GMT Master II features a Rolex Oyster case, a Triplock crown, and 100-meter water resistance.
The retail price of the Rolex GMT-Master II is $10,750 in steel on the Jubilee bracelet. Selecting the Oyster bracelet option carries a $700 price premium. Current-generation preowned Rolex GMT Master II prices range from $18,000 to $20,000.
