The 2017 Ressence Type 5G (grey dial) dive watch follows the 2015 Ressence Type 5 diver and the 2016 Ressence Type 5B diver black. This 46mm grade 5 titanium dive watch is an evolution of the original Type 5, the first Ressence watch that could be taken in water for a swim.

The 46mm polished titanium case of the Ressence Type 5G is razor slim and comprises the minority of the watch’s 15.9mm thickness. A domed sapphire crystal, unidirectional rotating dive besel, caseback setting system, and movement lock comprise the remainder of the watch. A set of short and stubby lugs ensure that even watch buyers with small wrists can enjoy this functionally oversized dive watch.

Ressence employs its ROCS 5 system to display the time. 142 parts and 16 jewels combine with a magnetic coupling, 37.5mm of oil, and a regulator dial with planetary action to convey the time to the watch’s owner. Independent displays of hours, minutes, seconds (the “runner”), and even a thermometer can be read as they circulate around the dial. Copious quantities of super luminova are employed to ensure easy reading at night, during a dive, or both.

Due to the similar index of refraction of the sapphire crystal and the oil within the dial, the owner of this watch can read the time from any angle whether above or below the waterline.

The unidirectional dive bezel can be aligned to the minute hand of the Ressence Type 5G in order to time a dive. Due to the fact that the caseback is used to set the time, it is critical that the caseback not move and extend the dive while submerged. For this reason, the diving model of the Ressence ROCS module includes a lock that disables all caseback setting functions at will.

Ressence employs a tough and reliable ETA 2824-2 automatic Swiss caliber. The movement can be wound manually and set via the caseback interface. As used in the Type 5G, the ETA has a 36-hour power reserve, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and is protected to 100 meters by the water resistance of the case. While extremes of temperature can damage the watch’s oil-filled chamber (thus, the dial-side thermometer), the Ressence ROCS system includes bellows that permit routine expansion and contraction of the oil under normal operating circumstances.

The Ressence Type 5G is encased in 46mm of titanium surrounding a grey dial on a grey alligator leather strap. Functions include hours, minutes, oil temperature gauge, and runner. The watch also measures 51.3mm in thickness and 15.9mm from lug-to-lug.
