The tourbillon has a long history in watchmaking, tracking its roots all the way back to 1801 when Abraham Louis-Breguet invented it to help regulate timekeeping. From there, the tourbillon escapement became increasingly popular with even Omega in the 1940s developing their own.
But are tourbillons useful in the modern era? What watches helped popularize the innovation? What does a tourbillon even do?
