Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT 232.90.44.22.03.001 versus Jaeger LeCoultre Master Compressor Diving GMT Q187T770. Today’s showdown is a battle of serious dive watches with GMT complications, titanium cases, and two of the foremost names in luxury watches. The dive watch class is the dominant segment of the luxury watch market thanks to the Rolex Submariner, but today’s contestants prove that there more than life after Rolex; dive watches hail from every corner of land-locked Switzerland!
The Omega Seamaster is the traditional rival to the Rolex Submariner and its big brother, the Rolex Sea Dweller. But in a reversal of roles, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT 600M starts today as the big-brand over-dog in a new rivalry with boutique luxury watch brand Jaeger LeCoultre. Omega’s Planet Ocean GMT bowed at Baselworld 2013, and this example features a 43.5mm grade five titanium case. Omega adds a superb titanium bracelet with a fold-out extension in its diving clasp. A GMT-style 24-hour bezel features a ceramic insert for scratch-resistance, and it allows the user to read three time zones on this luxury sports watch.
An Omega co-axial chronometer caliber 8605 keeps the beat with a 60-hour power reserve and a quirky co-axial-specific 25,200 VpH cadence. Each Omega caliber 8605 includes the ability to display a second time zone in 24-hour format. The automatic-winding movement is protected to 600-meters by advance case construction, and an Omega Seamaster Professional signature, the helium release valve, protects against crystal ejection following saturation dives in exotic gas mixtures.
Jaeger LeCoultre’s Master Compressor Diving GMT is a 44mm limited edition of 1,500 from SIHH 2007. This true dive watch – it retains a unidirectional bezel – is broader and flatter than the squat Omega Planet Ocean. Jaeger LeCoultre’s diving bracelet is one of the finest ever made; rubber-wrapped titanium provides the warmth of the strap with the solidity of a bracelet. The diving clasp features double-deployant action and no fewer than four triggers to ensure that only intentional action will release the mechanism; each side includes a micro-adjustment mechanism.
The Master Compressor Diving GMT is a true 1000-meter dive watch. Its Compressor crown permits easy one-turn access to the Jaeger LeCoultre caliber 975D “Autotractor” automatic caliber. Engineered for both precision and toughness, the JLC caliber 975D offers a 48-hour power reserve, highly efficient winding, and a robust structure that includes thick construction, a full balance bridge, and a free sprung balance. The hairspring is built for JLC by Lange and laser welded at the stud and collet for greater stability.
Rolex, move aside; today belongs to Omega and Jaeger LeCoultre!
