The 2022 Patek Philippe watches are only days away as Watches & Wonders 2022 approaches. For the first time, Patek Philippe will unveil its new watches in Geneva, home city of Patek and the Stern family. The Nautilus 5711 has been discontinued, the Aquanaut collection turns 25 years old, and the Calatrava dress watch prepares to celebrate its 90th anniversary. Today's show features Tim Mosso's predictions for what watch collectors will see from Patek Philippe when Watches & Wonders Geneva opens on March 30th.

In 2021, Patek Philippe announced its intention to discontinue the Nautilus 5711 sports watch. A green dial model - reference 5711/1a-014 - and a Tiffany blue model - reference 5711/1a-018 - marked the end of sixteen model years of 5711 production. The Patek Philippe Nautilus had become such a phenomenon that Thierry Stern, CEO and principal owner of the brand, decided to end production of the core model for a time. His reasoning was sound; Patek Philippe as a brand is more important than any single model, and the 5711's speculative value surge was overshadowing Patek as a whole.

Sure enough, the 5711 is gone for 2022, but there is potential for the Aquanaut sports watch family to step into the void of its older brother. With the flagship gone, Aquanaut 5167A becomes the premier Patek Philippe sports watch in stainless steel. With or without a matching steel bracelet, the Aquanaut 5167 is the only game in town for watch collectors seeking a simple sports watch from Patek Philippe. With the 25th anniversary of the Aquanaut occurring this year, these is room for Patek to launch a new model - perhaps a 6167A - to carry the mantle of Patek sports watches after the 5711. A new movement, a new bracelet, new dial colors, and a new reference all could energize the now quarter-century old Aquanaut model line.

The Patek Philippe Calatrava also celebrates a significant anniversary in 2022. 1932 marked the first year of Stern family ownership of Patek Philippe. It also holds special significance as the year Patek started using reference numbers for its models. Patek Philippe reference 96 was the first watch launched under the Sterns, the first Patek to have a reference number, and -- retroactively -- the Patek Philippe 96 became the first model in what came to be called the "Calatrava" family of dress watches. Patek Philippe has announced its intention to discontinue the Calatrava 5196 for 2022, so a successor model may arrive at Watches & Wonders.

In addition to the Nautilus, Patek Philippe intends to discontinue a broad range of models. The Calatrava 5196 in all three golds and platinum will end this March. The 5230G perpetual calendar is on track to be discontinued, but new versions such a s 5230R or 5230J may be launched. The 5204R split seconds perpetual calendar chronograph will be discontinued, and Patek may replace it with a model in yellow gold, white gold, or even stainless steel. Both the salmon dial and blue dial versions of the 5372P monopusher split seconds perpetual calendar chronograph are scheduled to end. And the cloisonne enamel yellow gold world time reference 5231J will be discontinued with a view to offering the watch in other metals. World time reference 5230 in white gold and rose gold also will be discontinued as Watches & Wonders opens.

In addition, WatchBox and Tim Mosso will present two watches for auction at the Revolution Magazine and RedBar Group's #watchfamforukraine solidarity auction. Watch collectors, watchmakers, and watch brands will donate rare and desirable watches from March 25 to March 28. Eric Ku's "Loupe This" website will conduct the auction. WatchBox will donate a Rolex Submariner 126613LB, and Tim will donate his Sinn EZM 1.1. Both watches are full-set with complete box and papers, and Tim's watch will be accompanied by a hand-written note of authentication and thanks for the new owner.
