Luxury watches are expensive -- but you already knew this. The surprise lies in how much luxury watches depreciate the moment they leave the dealer's showroom. Unlike cars, luxury watches never become scrap metal, but most watches do reach a point when preowned watch prices are stable and far lower than original retail price. Tonight, Tim walks our audience through a stunning list of luxury watches now available for a fraction of their original retail prices.
Tonight's show also includes a list of superb luxury watches available for $6,000 and less. From Breitling to Longines to Tudor, the current crop of watches on a $6,000 budget is better than it's ever been. The 2023 watches in this category offer everything from dive watches to chronographs to pilot's watches and beyond.
Tim examines a series of watches from Omega, Blancpain, Vacheron Constantin, and A. Lange & Sohne that lose tremendous amounts of value after purchase. The beloved Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 5015 in titanium is a fantastic exemplar of a popular model that, nevertheless, loses value. Against a retail price of $16,500, the titanium blue dial Fifty Fathoms can be purchased for $11,000.
Omega's Speedmaster Moonwatch Grey Side of the Moon is a $12,000 ceramic watch -- with a platinum dial! -- that can be purchased used for under $9,000. Remember, this is a ceramic watch, so buyers are guaranteed to get it preowned with no refinishing -- and, likely no marks whatsoever.
For example, a $24,100 Vacheron Constantn Historiques 1942 Complete Calendar becomes an $18,000 watch when preowned. A Breguet Marine Tourbillon Chronograph 5837 that retails for $167,900 costs less than $60,000 when only a few years old. The mighty platinum A. Lange & Sohne Lange 31 has a retail price of $178,400 but a preowned market price of $89,950.
Tudor's Black Bay GMT (M79830RB) was new for 2018, but Tudor's "Pepsi" GMT receives a new white dial for 2023. Designed in homage to the Pan Am "Executive" dial of the reference 6542 Rolex GMT Master, the white dial Tudor GMT is a mid-cycle update that transforms the Black Bay GMT's character. Already renowned for its distinctive bezel and robust 200-meter water resistance, the Tudor GMT gains another facet - elegance - with its new white dial. For $4,375, this Tudor pilot's watch is also a traveler's best-buy.
The Longines Spirit Flyback Titanium Chronograph offers Breitling-level quality at a price of only $5,200. The watch has a versatile 42mm case diameter in grade five titanium, a 100-meter water resistance, and a COSC chronometer certified column wheel chronograph movement with 68 hours of power reserve. A flyback chronograph offers rapid-fire action for events in quick succession. The quick-release bracelet also offers easy swapping to straps when the occasion calls for a tactical look.
