The Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT SBGE245 might be my favorite Grand Seiko limited edition. This 600-piece limited series is a 2018 model year celebration of all that makes Seiko and Grand Seiko watches sensational; color, character, exclusive engineering, and surprising levels of hand-finishing for a watch from a major luxury watch brand. This Spring Drive dual time watch is a gem, and only 600 lucky owners will know how special the “245” truly is!
This Spring Drive GMT outwardly resembles the similar SBGE215. Like the “215”, the SBGE245 includes a “Zaratsu” mirror-polished 44mm stainless steel case. Also like the 215, the 245 includes a sapphire-capped bi-directional 24 hour GMT bezel. The iridescent blue metallic base of the fully luminescent bezel shines with radiant force through the scratch-resistant cambered sapphire cap.
Differences between the SBGE215 and the limited edition begin to emerge on the bezel base; the 245 features no yellow gold accents. On the dial, the 245 opens a gap; it dispenses with its regular-production brother’s yellow gold indices and hands for a more limited use of yellow gold highlights. In the place of gold, Grand Seiko employs a blazing burgundy metallic dial base; it’s explosive, expressive, and exclusive to this model.
Two time zones in 12-hour / 24-hour formats, a date, and a power reserve indicator grace the dial. All elements of the dial include Grand Seiko’s proprietary LumiBrite luminant paint ensures that all primary functions of the watch remain visible at night.
Grand Seiko equips the Spring Drive GMT with a full stainless steel bracelet and a folding clasp. The deployant clasp is released with a trigger mechanism.
The SBGE 245 limited edition includes superior 200-meter water resistant. This capability protects a Spring Drive automatic caliber 9R66 with a 3-day power reserve and guaranteed precision of +/- 15 seconds per month. The manufacture movement boasts stop seconds, independent dual time zones, a power reserve indicator, and 30 jewels for smooth operation. It is hand-assembled and adjusted by Grand Seiko watchmakers.
Despite operating with the precision of a quartz caliber, Spring Drive includes no motors, no batteries, and no capacitors. All motion is produced directly by a mainspring, and the seamlessly smooth sweep of the seconds hand is a signature of the Seiko-exclusive Spring Drive technology
The Grand Seiko Sport Collection Spring Drive GMT in stainless steel is a 600 piece limited edition watch measures 44mm in diameter. This timepiece measures 50.8mm lug-to-lug and is 52.7mm end-link-to-end-link.
