Laurent Ferrier Galet Square Autumn Dial 41mm LCF0013.AC.RG1.1 Review
5m 55s
The Laurent Ferrier Galet Square Micro Rotor LCF0013.AC.RG1.1 is a 41mm poem in stainless steel. Based on the core “weathered pebble” design ethic of Laurent Ferrier of Geneva, the Galet Square adds a four-corner profile with the integrity of polished stainless steel. An exotic dual direct impulse “natural” escapement and 3-day power reserve ensure that this steel sensation packs both precision and endurance.
Laurent Ferrier is an independent watch brand founded by the master watchmaker of the same name. Alongside his son, Christian, Laurent Ferrier overseas the conception of high horology timepieces that combine an improbably density of fine finish, technical innovation, graceful design, and frequent use of rugged stainless steel. Steel Laurent Ferrier watches offer all of the innovation and charm of FP Journe with the movement finishing virtuosity of Patek Philippe for prices that undercut both elite brands.
The Galet Square Micro Rotor houses a vertically satin grained salmon or “autumn” dial inside a polished stainless steel case of 41mm diameter. The watch’s flanks are smooth, layered, and broken only by four 90-degree junctions with the straight lugs. All features of the dial are immaculately rendered, and white gold dart hour indices are matched by 18-karat “assegai” (spear) hands.
Within the vessel, a Laurent Ferrier / La Fabrique Du Temps (FBN) 229.01 movement winds by pawl-based micro rotor. The pawls and jeweled staff pivot ensure that the 22-karat micro rotor winds the 72-hour power reserve without rattle or wobble. A dual direct impulse escapement acts directly against the balance roller while eliminating the traditional Swiss lever escapement. The system employs no lubricants as the twin nickel phosphorous escape wheels lock and unlock by means of a silicon blocker; precision and enhanced power reserve are the benefits.
The Laurent Ferrier caliber FBN 299.01 includes a sophisticated combination of free sprung balance and overcoil hairspring for precise regulations (in six positions) and concentric hairspring breathing in any orientation with respect to gravity. The 35-jewel movement includes industry-leading hand finishing that counts black polish (poli noir), cotes de Geneve, mirrored chamfering (anglage), and tight engine turning (perlage) on the base plate. An extraordinary count of five interior angles graces the bridges.
The Larent Ferrier Galet Square Micro Rotor can be counted among the few areas of common cause for which both Hodinkee and Tim Mosso agree; the result is world class.
The Laurent Ferrier Galet Square SS features a 41mm stainless steel case surrounding a sunburst gold dial on a tan leather strap with a stainless steel deployant buckle. Functions include hours, minutes and small-seconds. The watch measures 47.3mm lug-to-lug.
