Happy New Year from Mike and WatchBox. To celebrate, we're taking a look back at our favorite moments of 2021 and what we expect from 2022. But first, Mike rings in the new year with a selection of astounding pieces from the vault. He highlights the Vacheron Constantin Overseas 4500V with a deep-blue dial, the rose gold Piaget Altiplano and a Rolex Day-Date in platinum.
Reflecting on 2021, Mike discusses it as the year of independent watchmakers. The momentum of brands like MB&F and H. Moser & Cie. and the auction results for the F.P. Journe Souscription Set and other similar pieces indicate this independent sector is on the rise. The year was also big for Patek Philippe with the releases of the new base movement in the 6119 Calatrava, the 5236 Perpetual Calendar, and, of course, the 5711 Tiffany Nautilus all contributing to its continued success.
Looking forward, 2022 is sure to have its share of surprises and standouts. It is the 50th anniversary of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, which is sure to excite collectors and possibly stir up even more interest in Gerald Genta pieces. And he's predicting no slowdown for Rolex, which continues to dominate on the secondary market.
