The long-running Panerai Luminor Submersible PAM 25 in titanium ranks among the few Officine Panerai references to endure almost unchanged since the early "Vendome" era. Conceived as one of the first new models of the Richemont-led luxury era at Panerai, the Submersible PAM 25 represents a true survivor and a modern classic. And that's because it flat-out rocks.
Panerai's Submersible PAM 25 takes the iconic Luminor look to the next level of muscle and wrist presence. What was big became bolder, and what was tough became tougher. As a final pièce de résistance, Panerai fits the Luminor Submersible PAM 25 with a distinctive hobnail or “waffle” pattern dial to distinguish further this “Sub” from its steel PAM 24 sibling.
While standard Luminors sport a combination of features accumulated over six decades of evolution, the Submersible spliced Panerai's gene pool with 21st century dive watch DNA. Out went the old fixed bezel; in came a unidirectional rotating model as mandated by ISO 6425 - the literal definition of a dive watch.
Panerai added a constant seconds hand to comply with the same international standard, and the "pièce de résistance" is, well, a robust 300 meter (1000 ft) water resistance rating.
But the classic Panerai Luminor traits are present in full. The famed Device Protecting the Crown (DPC) stands guard over the crown. When it's released, the watch can be wound and set without fiddling with a screw-down headache. Moreover, the crescent-shaped guard can deflect virtually any blow that won't separate the watch from the strap... and your hand from your arm.
The famous Luminor cushion case – here rendered in brushed titanium – is lifted virtually unmodified from the original 44mm model. Although large, it is blessed with the legendary Panerai ergonomics - and aesthetics - that allow it to sit lightly and appear beautifully proportioned on all but the most petite wrists.
A subdued Ti finish with fine graining keeps the “bling” at bay for those who feel no need to party like its (still) 1999. The exotic gray metal offers delightfully minimal mass and never proves obtrusive or distracting on the wrist.
The rugged Panerai movement is based on a tough Valjoux 7750, but this one packs the added refinement of COSC chronometer accuracy certification. While the new-school of "Manifattura" Panerai-exclusive movements are impressive, none of them receive chronometer certs: advantage, old-school.
