No Patek Philippe watch carries the same combination of wrist presence and horological gravitas of the legendary 5070. Launched in 1998, discontinued after 2009, and produced in roughly 250 pieces per metal, per year, the Patek Philippe 5070 chronograph is coveted by watch buyers and watch collectors.
The 42mm Patek Philippe 5070 chronograph was considered a giant when launched at Baselworld 1998. Almost as large as a Royal Oak Offshore and clearly inspired by giant vintage Patek Philippe prototypes, the 5070 quickly earned a reputation as one of the most coveted watches in Patek Philippe's catalog. Wait lists were long, purchase offers were evaluated by Philippe and Thierry Stern themselves, and only watch buyers of standing with the brand took delivery at authorized Patek Philippe dealers.
In 2004, a rose gold Patek Philippe 5070R joined the catalog, and today's 18-karat rose gold 5070R includes a cool grey metallic dial with applied rose gold Arabic numerals. Leaf hands grace the center dial, and the twin chronograph registers sit recessed with "railroad" tracks for precise reading. A tachymeter scale at the edge of the dial cloaks the true size of the movement and permits the measurement of a race car's speed.
The rose gold case of the 5070R includes welded lugs with fluted outer shoulders. The bezel includes a double stepped conical profile, and the case band is minimalist with a high polished gold finish. The chronograph pushers are rectangular, and the crown bears the Patek Philippe Calatrava Cross logo.
The Patek Philippe caliber CH 27-70 is based on the Lemana 2310 ebauche that went to the Moon on the Omega Speedmaster Professional in 1969.
This traditional chronograph caliber is a manual wind movement with a 48-hour power reserve, five-position adjustment, a column wheel with lateral clutch, and a beat rate of 18,000 vibrations per hour. The caliber CH 27-70 is decorated to a standard that permits it to bear the Geneva Hallmark (Poincon de Geneve). A Patek Philippe Gyromax free-sprung balance is employed, and it bears a Breguet overcoil hairspring for concentric breathing in any position.
The Patek Philippe Chronograph is encased in 42mm of rose gold surrounding a silver dial on a black alligator leather strap. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, tachymeter, and chronograph. The watch also measures 11.8mm in thickness and 48.4mm from lug-to-lug.
