New Rolex models arrive yearly, but the 2021 Rolex Datejust 36 was a standout. It wasn't that Rolex had just redesigned the model or changed the reference -- that happened in 2018 -- the story was a new dial. Described universally as the "palm dial," its official Rolex name is "Olive green, palm motif." Regardless, this new Rolex is one of Tim's favorites, and he's sharing it along with his personal "uncool Rolex" highlight list tonight on "Watches Tonight."
The 2021 Rolex Datejust collection brought a host of new references, prices, and dials. But the 2021 Rolex "palm dial" was the most lauded. Technically, the palm dial's appearance varies depending on the metal used. Full stainless steel and steel-white gold ("White Rolesor") models get green palm dials; steel-yellow gold two-tone models ("Rolesor") get gold palm dials; steel-rose gold models get silver palm dials. But since 2021 was the year of the green-dialed watch, the steel model seems most timely. Moreover, Rolex's corporate color is green, so the green Datejust palm dial feels like it's the most tangibly related to Rolex's history and values.
Rolex references 126200 (domed bezel, steel) and 126234 (steel case, white gold bezel) are the models equipped with the green palm. While not all Datejust dials are luminescent, the palm dial is, so visibility at night is a strength of this design. The Oyster and Jubilee bracelets are offered as options on both versions of this Datejust 36. Pricing varies depending on the options, but the Rolex 126200 with Oyster bracelet ($7,250), and the 126234 with gold bezel and Jubilee bracelet tops the green dial pricing permutations at $8,750. All Rolex watches carry a five-year warranty, and the service interval for most Rolex models is believed to be as long as ten years.
Internally, Rolex's palm dial Datejust 36mm collection employs the same caliber 3235. It is an automatic movement with 70 hours of power reserve. Watch collectors will appreciate that the movement is hardened against both shock and magnetism. Rolex certifies each caliber 3235 as a COSC Swiss chronometer, but pre-delivery testing at the Rolex factory surpasses the timing tolerances of the COSC test. This movement includes both hacking seconds and a quickset date for convenience.
Alternatives to the Rolex Datejust include models from Omega such as those in the Seamaster Aqua Terra collection as well as watches from the Grand Seiko Sport and Elegance collections. Omega also offers sporty dress watches from the Constellaton and De Ville collections that could be considered as alternatives to the larger Rolex Datejust models.
All of this plus watch collector wrist shots will be featured in this episode of "Watches Tonight!"
