Tonight, Tim offers his first live review of a luxury watch: the 2021 Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. While the name "Tim Mosso" is synonymous with luxury watch reviews, most of those videos live on WatchBox Reviews. Tonight, Tim discusses the newest Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch with a frank take on the new Omega Speedy's successes and shortfalls.
In addition, tonight's show focuses on the value to be had in modern Breguet watches; they're simply the most underrated modern luxury timepieces available today. All of that and watch collector wrist shots can be found on this episode of "Watches Tonight" with Tim Mosso.
The 2021 Omega Speedmaster Professional "Moonwatch" is a big deal. Unlike the 2021 novelties from Rolex and Patek Philippe, even the most coveted Omega novelties tend to be accessibly priced AND available at dealers within a reasonable timeframe. Omega's latest take on its NASA-issued space chronograph marks one giant leap for watch that built its fame on the wrists of astronauts. At 42mm, and stainless steel, the external appearance of the Moonwatch hasn't changed dramatically, but all is new within its ferrous carapace.
Let's start with the exterior; Omega has calculated the dial, bezel, and bracelet of the 2021 Speedmaster Professional to recall the Apollo-era 105.012 Speedmaster that truly did land on the Moon with Neal, Buzz, and third man Michael Collins. A subtle re-profiling of the anodized aluminum tachymeter adds a "dot over 90" and "diagonal dot" at numeral 75. Omega retains the "hesalite" (i.e., plastic) crystal on standard Moonwatches, and the dial beneath features subtly redesigned chronograph registers and hour indices. For sapphire crystal models with display casebacks, Omega's new Moonwatch dial gains an applied metal Omega logo.
Omega's new Moonwatch caliber 3861 is the big news for 2021. First previewed in 2019 on the Apollo XI 50th anniversary limited edition, the 3861 makes huge strides in durability and precision. This is the first Omega Speedmaster Professional to include both a co-axial escapement and a METAS Master Chronometer certification. A free-sprung balance, an antimagnetic silicon hairspring, and hacking seconds round out the changes. For the first time, the display caseback Speedmaster Professional uses the same movement as the closed caseback NASA version, so all examples of the caliber 3861 are cleanly finished.
Moonwatches aside, Tim looks to Swatch Group flagship brand Breguet for overlooked value in an era of relentless watch hype. While watches from Rolex, Patek Philippe, and FP Journe dominate social media and collector conversations, the Breguet brand offers superior products with almost no wait lists at dealers, preowned surcharges, or breathless over exposure on Instagram.
Tim take an extended look at the late model sports watches and dress watches available from Breguet. The famous Breguet Type XX (and XXI, and XXII) pilot's watch, the Marine water resistant sports watch, and the elegant "La Tradition" in all of its forms take pride of place on tonight's show.
Fans of dress watches will be stunned by how much Breguet a watch collector can purchase with a fraction of FP Journe Chronometre Bleu money. From grand feu bleu enamel dials to spectacular open movements, Breguet offers a match for nearly any watch collector taste or wrist size. And for fans of complicated watchmaking, Tim highlights the spectacular value of the Breguet Tradition 7047 tourbillon fusee and the enamel dial Breguet Classique 3420 jump hour.
Watches mentioned include the Omega 310.30.42.50.01.002, the 310.30.42.50.01.001, the 310.32.42.50.01.001, the 310.32.42.50.01.002, and the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Silver Snoopy 310.32.42.50.02.001
