2024 Watches & Wonders Patek Philippe Predictions: Is a Patek Dive Watch Coming?

The 2024 Patek Philippe watches will be here in just weeks! As Watches & Wonders approaches, Tim Mosso speculates about what kind of 2024 watches Thierry Stern will unveil at the biggest luxury watch show of the year. With no history of dive watches, Patek Philippe may break new ground if it decides to launch a diving model this year. As for the Nautilus, a new metal such as steel or rose gold or new dials colors might be coming soon.

While Patek Philippe has never built a diving watch, the brand has proved willing to experiment, and this is particularly true with the Patek Philippe Aquanaut collection. Launched in 1997 with the company's first rubber strap, the Aquanaut has grown to include travel time watches, Advanced Research experimental models, chronographs, and even minute repeaters. Will the Patek Philippe Aquanaut also become a dive watch? Tim sorts the growing prestige of divers and the likelihood that such a watch might find a home at Patek.
Regarding the Patek Philippe 5811, the newest Nautilus may be due for a few changes. With no updates over its first two model years, the successor to the Nautilus 5711 might be ripe for a new variant in 2024. Possibilities include a stainless steel case (less likely) or a rose gold model (more likely). Patek has previously proved willing to combine white gold and rose gold (e.g. 5712GR) in a notably opulent application of the two-tone look.
Stainless steel, while a favorite of watch collectors, is unlikely to appear until late in the life of the 5811. Patek Philippe management has been clear that it did not want the steel 5711 to overshadow the brand as a whole, and a 5811 in stainless is likely to be avoided for the same reason. However, new dial colors such as brown, green, pink, and purple might be offered in 2024.
Other Patek Philippe watch models may see updates or additions in 2024. The expensive -- nearly $300,000 -- 5520P travel time alarm could use a more affordable stainless steel model to appeal to tool watch fans and offer buyers better value. The Golden Ellipse collection has shrunk to three models and desperately needs new ideas. Finally, Tim would love to see Patek Philippe resurrect the "compliant" metal mechanisms previewed on the 2017 Aquanaut Travel Time Advanced Research in 2017.
All of this plus live discussion and watch collector wrist shots appears tonight on "Watches Tonight!"
