Hall Of Shame - The Worst of Watches

Nobody asked for an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Spider Man. But we got one anyway in 2023. And there was the Black Panther tourbillon in 2021. Marvel Studios might have seemed like a Bluechip property when Audemars Piguet signed a licensing deal in on the heels of "Avengers: Endgame," but AP's Marvel watches arrived at the exact moment the MCU itself started to go off the rails. Tonight's show focuses on this and other ideas in the watch industry's recent hall of shame.
To be perfectly honest, luxury watches are silly things. Nobody needs expensive toys, and pricey mechanical watches certainly qualify. So there was a surprising lack of self-awareness in the uproar of anger and incredulity that met the release of the 2021 AP Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon. No, we didn't need this comic book and movie-based 250 piece Royal Oak limited edition. But watch collectors somehow decided that Black Panther and Spider Man were unserious and unnecessary while F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain and Greubel Forsey Double Tourbillon 30 Degrees somehow... were?
Tonight's show also covers infamous failures like luxury watch rental service Eleven James and the ethically ambiguous Romain Jerome Titanic DNA series of grave-robbing curiosities. Additional attention will be lavished on the incongruous Zenith Revolucione CHE Guevara - a proletariat guerrilla's watch for a plutocrat's budget.
