Tim Mosso's weekly luxury watch collector's companion roars to life with a review of the 2021 Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, an overview of Tim's favorite Omega Speedmaster models since joining Watch-u-Want in 2014, and advice concerning the watches that each watch enthusiast should sell this year. All of that and watch collector wrist shots are on the agenda for YouTube's only life luxury watch enthusiasts' forum.
The new 2021 Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch represents the first comprehensive redesign of the iconic Omega space chronograph since 1996. While the NASA-issued sports watch remains space walk-approved and flight qualified, it has been transformed inside and discreetly refined outside. First, nothing about the traditional 42mm stainless steel case or Hesalite crystal has changed.
But the matte black chronograph dial now features a gentle "grained" surfacing, slightly inset hour indices, and an applied Omega logo on sapphire crystal models. A "dot over ninety" tachymeter bezel recalls vintage Omega Speedmaster models. Total quality increases, but so does the price. A full-bracelet 2021 Omega Speedmaster Professional now costs $6,300 on a bracelet and over $7,000 with a sapphire crystal and display caseback.
Each redesigned 2021 Omega Moonwatch features the manual-wind Master Chronometer caliber 3861 that launched on the Apollo XI 50th anniversary models in 2019. The movement gains a METAS chronometer certification, a silicon hairspring, a free-sprung balance, a co-axial escapement, and a slight power reserve increase to 50 hours total.
Since Tim's first full year with Watch-u-Want (later WatchBox), Omega's endless stream of new Speedmaster models has included a few of your host's favorite Swiss watch novelties. In 2015, Tim celebrated the toy-like Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch White Side of The Moon. 2016 brought the lauded Omega Speedmaster CK2998 with blue dial and luminescent bezel. The 2017 Speedmaster Moonwatch Grey Side of The Moon Porsche Club of America was a 99-piece masterclass in co-branding done right. A 2018 Speedmaster Moonwatch Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 ranks as Tim's preference for that model year. 2019 was the year of the exquisite Omega Speedmaster Platinum Caliber 321, a Moonwatch built like a Patek Philippe 5070. And of course, the 2020 model year belonged to the Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy 50th Anniversary and the re-edition of the Omega Speedmaster caliber 321 "Ed White" (105.003).
