Today, Tim Mosso offers a buyer's guide stocked with his favorite Patek Philippe watches. The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 was discontinued in 2021, which means that we can talk in earnest about all the best Patek Philippe watches still in the catalog. The exhausting hype surrounding Patek's sports watch has been consigned to history, and today's show is about the coolest Patek Philippe Calatravas, Complications, Grand Complications, Pilots, and Golden Ellipses.
Perpetual calendar chronographs are a long-running tradition at Patek Philippe. Since the launch of the 1518 in 1941, there was been at least one perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch in production - an unbroken line that continues with today's 2022 5270P-014. Now equipped with a gradient fade green dial, the platinum Patek Philippe 5270 perpetual calendar chronograph puts a contemporary face on a hallowed franchise. At $211,720
Travel time watches are common in the watch industry, but few boast as much value as the 2022 Patek Philippe 5326G. At 41mm in white gold, this a versatile sports-inspired model with tons of lume, a second timezone, an annual calendar, and a new micro rotor automatic movement. A gradient grey dial and case with clous-de-Paris hobnails sets the 5326G apart from the rest of the Patek "Complications" collection. A retail price of $76,880 is downright reasonable compared to what buyers have been paying for the stainless steel Patek Nautilus.
New for 2022, the Patek Philippe 5470P builds on the company's reputation for ultra luxury chronographs. Equipped with a 5Hz escapement, the 5470P is designed to permit timing of events down to an interval of 1/10th of a second. Two co-axial chronograph seconds hands at the center of the dial keep track of the time; one makes a circuit of the dial every 12 seconds, and the other is a conventional 60-second chronograph seconds hand.
The foudroyant hand is used to read the tenths of seconds. Inside, Patek Philippe caliber CH 29‑535 PS 1/10 includes all of the technologies from the original four Patek Philippe Advanced Research watches. Gyromax Si, a gold and silicon free-sprung balance, joins the Spiromax silicon hairspring and Pulsomax silicon escapement. Extensive hand finishing ensures that this 41mm platinum chronograph is as attractive internally as it is externally. At a price of roughly $380,000, the 5470P is priced to match its complexity.
Alarm watches are the most practical watches, and the Patek Philippe 5520P is the ultimate alarm watch. This "pilot style" travel time watch measures 42.2mm in platinum. A second time zone will prove useful to travelers, and the programmable alarm will keep owners on schedule. The alarm system can be set in a 24-hour format and adjusted in 15-minute increments. If desired, the alarm can be disabled. Like a minute repeater, the 5520P employs a centrifugal governor, annular gongs, and polished strikers. Luminescent paint ensures that this travel time watch is ready to read 24 hours per day.
Relevant watch references include Patek Philippe references 5235G-001, 5236P-001, 5326G-001, 5270P-014, 5520P-001, Patek Philippe 5016, 5207G-001, 5738/51G-001, 5522A-001, 5711/1A, 5167A, 5470P-001
All of this plus watch collector wrist shots will be featured in this episode of "Watches Tonight!"
