Waiting years to buy a luxury watch - when you already have the money available - is one of the great disappointments of collecting watches. While supply and scarcity can't be helped, there's a right way and a wrong way to discuss the topic. Tonight, Tim discusses the message that watch buyers need to hear when the Rolex, Patek Philippe, or Audemars Piguet they want isn't in stock.
Tim Mosso also discusses how he bought and regretted luxury watch purchases ranging from Swatch watches to Casio G-Shocks. His experience as a luxury watch collector doesn't include the usual Rolex Submariner or Daytona, but chronographs, travel time watches, and Jaeger-LeCoultre are on the list.
In many instances, Tim bought the right watch at the wrong time. His original JLC Master Ultra Thin 34 was a wonderful timepiece, but a sketchy eBay listing and bad photographs forced an untimely breakup. Later, when he bought his second Master Ultra Thin 34, a client broke the watch by over-winding it.
Later, Tim bought a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Moon. It was a beautiful triple calendar moonphase with a black dial and a stainless steel 37mm case. For only $5,500, the JLC Master Moon seemed like a deal. Unfortunately, what Tim really wanted was a perpetual calendar, and he eventually found one for $24,000. That was also a great deal, but two great deals don't equal one smart decision; Tim paid $5,500 too much to own the JLC Master Grande Memovox in platinum. Had he waited and not bought the Master Moon, Tim could have bought two distinct watches instead of winding up with two calendars.
Finally, there's the Sinn EZM 1.1, a watch often associated with Tim Mosso. Of course, he appreciated its hardened steel "Tegiment" case, superb luminescence, and versatile chronograph. But at 43mm, the EZM 1.1 was slightly too large for Tim's wrist. Over time, he came to realize that the lighter 40mm titanium EZM 1 should have been his daily companion for the four years that he wore the EZM 1.1.
