Cartier watches may be the fastest growing and most disruptive force in the luxury watch market in 2026. Once considered a jeweler with nothing more than a passing interest in watchmaking, Cartier has emerged as a serious rival to Rolex and Omega. The Cartier Tank, Cartier Santos, and Santos Dumont combine sophistication with real history and accessible prices.

Launched in 1904, the Cartier Santos is a classic that almost defies genres. Its initial owner, Alberto Santos Dumont, was an airship pilot who later graduated to fixed-wing aircraft. As a result, the Cartier "Santos" model produced by Louis Cartier for his friend simultaneously was the first pilot's watch, the first Cartier wristwatch, and one of the first wristwatches of any kind. Necessary to operate a two-hand airship, the wristwatch format made sense when no free hands were available to grab a pocket watch.

Today, the Cartier Santos covers a large amount of ground. The Santos sports watch is a relatively affordable integrated bracelet sports watch that sets itself apart from a large field of competitors. Priced at $8,650 in stainless steel, the 39.8mm Santos embodies what may be the best deal in luxury watches. It's water resistant to 100 meters, anitmagnetic to 1,200 Gauss, and equipped with both a strap and a bracelet from the factory. Its Quick Switch lugs allow rapid swapping of the bracelet and strap, and the Smart Link system permits easy sizing of the bracelet without a tool. For 2025, the Cartier Santos de Cartier in titanium expands the line without dramatically raising prices.

The Cartier Santos Dumont is the genteel brother to the sporty Santos Large. The Santos Dumont Micro Rotor - better knowns as the "Demoiselle" - is a fascinating picture of Cartier fine watchmaking in 2025. Its automatic caliber 9629 MC includes a winding rotor in the shape of Santos Dumont's "Demoiselle" series of winged aircraft. The skeleton dial is one and the same as the movement, and certain examples even feature decorative lacquer on gold gilding. It's a compact watch at 31mm in diameter and 43.5mm lug-to-lug, plus the micro rotor automatic movement keeps the watch thin at 8.3mm.

Any Cartier Tank is iconic, but the 2025 Cartier Tank A Guichets is a rarity among icons. Launched in 1928, the jump hour Tank a Guichets was envisioned as a more legible time-teller for drivers, pilots, and train engineers. Never common and only re-issued every decade or so, the Guichet returned in 2025 as a four-piece special series in yellow gold, platinum, and rose gold. For the first time, a new manual wind Cartier manufacture caliber was created specifically for the Tank a Guichets. The Tank a Guichets "Asymmetric" in platinum is a 200-piece limited edition of the reborn Cartier that is destined to become a collector's item.

As the 2026 model year approaches, Cartier's standing as Switzerland's second largest watchmaker seems destined to strengthen. While Cartier still has only a quarter of Rolex's market share and half of its production volume, Richemont's red juggernaut has already outstripped Omega's sales for four years running. Cartier's reputation as a watchmaker is strong, but awareness of its full model line offers one conceivable way for the brand to expand in the future. Equally, Cartier's relatively modest average retail price per watch sold gives the firm room to grow into a more premium image as its market share rises and reputation for watchmaking expands.
