Tim Mosso window shops his favorite luxury watches in today's episode of "Watches Tonight!" Expect a full list with details of luxury watches far from the usual brands.
Although Tim's prior watch collection and wishlist are well known to regular viewers, tonight's show focuses on the watches Tim would buy if he were forced to exclude all of his previous choices and candidates. Rolex, Omega, and Patek Philippe have the night off; this episode is a celebration of the weird and the wonderful of the luxury watch landscape. In addition, watch collector wrist shots and live chat play a major role in tonight's show.
In the world of watch collecting, mainstream brands like Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Rolex dominate the discussion. But Tim Mosso isn't that kind of collector, so his dream watch collection includes the Ulysse Nardin Sonata Silicium, the Charles Frodsham Double Impulse Chronometer, the H. Moser & Cie Endeavour Perpetual Tantalum, the vintage Louis Vuitton LV1 Monterrey, and the Eva Leube Ari. Tourbillon watches also make the shopping list in the form of the discontinued Badollet Ivresse and the Montres KF Ei8ht.
The H. Moser & Cie Endeavour Perpetual Tantalum is a spectacular watch; the Govberg limited edition of the same watch with a lapiz lazuli dial is even better. For 2023, H. Moser & Cie. has partnered with Govberg of the United States to create a 42mm tantalum perpetual calendar with a lapis dial. The distinctive combination is offered in a 10-piece limited edition alongside a sister watch that features the same specifications but a green jade dial instead of blue lapis.
Moser, an independent watch brand out of Schaffhausen, Switzerland, is famed for its fluid Endeavour case and the Andreas Strehler-designed perpetual calendar system. This calendar boasts numerous distinctions that are rare among perpetual calendars. First, it can be set forward or backwards in rapid fashion. Second, the calendar indicates only month and the date on the dial side in order to maintain a clean watch face; the leap year indicator is on the reverse of the watch. For good measure, the manual-wind HMC 800 movement includes a seven-day power reserve and a double-hairspring balance for maximum resistance to gravitational distortion of timing.
Historically, tourbillon watches are the peak of prestige watchmaking. While beautiful, challenging to construct, and amusing to own, tourbillon watches also suffer from fragility, high prices, and staggering repair costs if something breaks. Montres KF of La Chaux-de-Fonds. Watchmaker Karsten Fräßdorf (Anglicized as Frässdorf) translated his lifelong interest in marine chronometers into his Ei8ht sports tourbillon. Unlike fragile tourbillon regulators, the enormous chronometer-style assembly in the Ei8ht is able to resist 5,000g of shock and over 1,000 gauss of magnetic field strength.
Additional features of the Montres KF Ei8ht Tourbillon include sufficient water resistance for surface swimming, highly luminescent dials, and full customization options. Custom case designs, sizes, dial colors, lume use, and dial designs can be selected by the customer, so each watch has the potential to be unique. Tim would select a Montres KF Ei8ht with a "meteorite" pattern case, a blue dial, green dial accents, tons of lume, and a water resistant shark strap. The Ei8ht also includes a unique "SYNC" deployant clasp that opens and closes with symmetrical action for ease of use. Montres KF also includes a free service plan that results in the watch receiving a complementary service and warranty extension each time it is returned for oiling.
