The A Lange & Sohne Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon 740.056 with pink gold dial was the star of A Lange And Sohne’s SIHH 2019 luxury watch collection. This stunning 41mm white gold limited edition of 100 pieces follows the original 2016 platinum Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon. With a flyback chronograph, one-minute tourbillon regulator, perpetual calendar, power reserve indicator, and a solid 18-karat pink gold dial, the 2019 Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon chronograph proved as imposing at Watches And Wonders Miami as it did in Geneva the month prior.

A 41.5mm white gold case encloses the star of 2019’s reference 740.056; the solid pink gold dial. In step with recent dials described as “salmon” (step forward Patek Philippe 5270P-001), the new rose gold dial is distinct in two respects. First, this solid disc of media-blasted pink gold isn’t plated or galvanized in the fashion of most salmon dials. Second, the pink gold dial of the A. Lange & Sohne Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon dispenses with Lange’s usual galvanized color of a sterling silver dial blank.

Despite its considerable complexity, the 740.056 remains readable and well organized. Cruciform dial symmetry grants this Datograph better visual balance than comparably complex wristwatch complications from other watch brands. Signature elements such as the dial flange, tachymeter, “outsize date” (panoramadatum), and twin registers remain from the core Datograph model. A solid-gold moonphase disc at six o’clock, power reserve indicator at ten o’clock, and combination chronograph-calendar co-axial displays keep the watch from overpowering or over-populating the pink gold of the dial.

The 2019 Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon employs a white gold case with characteristic domed bezel, satin mid-case finish, and stepped lugs. A pusher adjuster at ten o’clock allows the owner to adjust all displays of the perpetual calendar in coordinated sequence for painless correction of a watch that has been sitting idle for a number of days. An alligator leather strap with a full deployant clasp (rare on Lange watches) complete the external features.

Under the display caseback is an A. Lange & Sohne manufacture caliber L952.2 manual wind movement. This caliber includes 729 parts, 58 synthetic rubies, and one brilliant-cut diamond for the tourbillon staff cap stone.

Despite the power-intensive complications, caliber L952.2 boasts a power reserve of 50 hours – aided in part by a balance beat rate of 18,000 vibration s per hour. The movement’s features include a moonphase accurate to over 122 years, a perpetual calendar mechanically programmed until the year 2100, day-night “danger zone” indicator for the perpetual calendar, a flyback chronograph with lateral clutch and column wheel, a one-minute tourbillon regulator, and a power reserve indicator.

Refinements of the caliber L952.2 include 5-position adjustment in the style of a chronometer, a Breguet overcoil hairspring for concentric beating in any orientation, and a fully-jeweled lateral chronograph clutch.

Decoration of an A. Lange and Sohne movement is a prime focus of any watch at any price from this Glashutte manufacture.

The Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon’s caliber L952.2 includes numerous aesthetic refinements and references to the historical A Lange & Sohne pocket watches from the pre-communist era of German watchmaking. All bridges are constructed of gold-hued “German Silver,” an unplated alloy of nickel, copper, and zinc. The chronograph clutch and bridges include jewels set in screw-fixed chaton that reference typical fabrication of Saxon pocket watches from the era of company founder F. A. Lange. “Glashutte Stripes” are employed; these Cotes-de-Geneve by another name. All screws are black-polished or heat-blued. Mirrored chamfers are applied to all bridges, and the balance cock is freehand engraved in the fashion that Lange watches have made famous. The black-polished tourbillon cock cover also includes sharply creased interior angles
