Hype watches - even the term is hard to escape. Luxury watches that become fetish objects are called "hype watches" for a reason. Rolex Daytona. Patek Philippe Nautilus. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. All are great products, but when the waiting lists, aftermarket prices, and social media baggage reach a fever pitch, it's time to consider alternatives to the most popular watches in the world. Tonight, Tim Mosso explains how to escape watch hype.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo and Patek Philippe Nautilus are legends. In 1972 and 1976, respectively, these sports watches were created by designer Gerald Genta during the most fruitful period of his career. Integrated steel sports watches were - at the time - a new idea, and the concept of a steel watch priced like a gold watch was unprecedented. The Royal Oak and Nautilus justly earned their place in the pantheon of watchmaking greatness.
Unfortunately, that particular pantheon is a bit of a fever dream these days. Too much social media exposure, mainstream buyers from outside the luxury watch community, finance bros, tech bros, and a surplus of dollars discovered all of what we in 2025 call "hype watches." Fortunately, there are alternatives.
If an integrated bracelet sports watch is what you want, there are fantastic options. Those seeking a Royal Oak Jumbo should look into the Chopard Alpine Eagle 41, the H. Moser & Cie Streamliner Centre Seconds, and the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self Winding.
A Patek Philippe 5711 or 5811 can be replaced by the boutique brand Czapek Antarctique, or another authentic product of Gerald Genta: the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40. The IWC Ingenieur - 3289 - is a recent re-launch that revives Genta's 1976 IWC Ingenieur SL, the historic reference 1832. Unlike so many integrated bracelet sports watches that emulate Genta's tropes from the 1970s, the IWC Ingenieur is the real deal. With a five-day power reserve, 100-meter water resistance, and anti-magnetic shielding, the IWC Ingenieur is more than just the Brad Pitt watch from F1 The Movie; it's a true original and an antidote to the hype.

Are Dress Watches Dead?
Dress watches were the first luxury watches. But in 2025, watch collectors seem less interested in formal watches than at any point in memory. Aside from boutique independents like F.P. Journe and longstanding model lines like the Patek Philippe Calatrava, there's precious little momentum behind ...
