The Omega Speedmaster is the world's most famous chronograph watch. Even on a landscape dominated by Rolex and Daytona price hype, the NASA-powered legend of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch reigns supreme among chronographs. Tonight, Tim Mosso explains and ranks his favorite Omega Speedmaster models of modern times. From the "Silver Snoopy II" to the outrageous Speedmaster Chrono Chime, this is a tour of highlights from the last three decades of Omega Speedmaster Production.
The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is the best-known Speedmaster model, but no current versions of this chronograph rank among Tim's favorites. This episode discusses watches slightly outside the mainstream of Omega watch collecting in general and the Speedmaster hobby in particular.
It's hard to believe that the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo XIII 45th Anniversary (311.32.42.30.04.003) retailed for $6,100 in 2015. Today, that 1,970 piece limited edition can command anywhere between $45,000 and $50,000 as a preowned watch. With its combination of Moonwatch case, "Peanuts" inspired comic strip dial, and gorgeous caseback art, the "Silver Snoopy 2" became an instant classic.
Omega graced both sides of this Speedmaster with the Charles Schulz character "Snoopy." On the dial, Snoopy is illuminated at night while thinking of the phrase "failure is not an option" from the Apollo XIII film. On the reverse of the case, a hand-engraved sterling silver Snoopy figure sits on a base of grand feu enamel designed to resemble the cosmos and stars.
This portrayal of Snoopy portrays the customized "astronaut" illustration of the character specifically created by Charles Schulz for the NASA "Silver Snoopy" excellence award. The award, which was given by the astronauts to outstanding NASA staff and suppliers, was bestowed on Omega in October of 1970 for the role of the Speedmaster Professional in recovering the crippled Apollo XIII spacecraft.
The Omega Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon (311.93.44.51.99.001) and White Side of the Moon (311.93.44.51.04.002) offer the appeal of a Speedmaster Moonwatch without the grief of scratches, dents, and scuffs. Both Speedmaster models feature ultra-hard ceramic cases guaranteed to resist all but the most brutal impacts. Due to their durability, the ceramic Omega Speedmasters tend to retail showroom-like condition even after years of daily use.
The Speedmaster Moonwatch Grey Side of the Moon (311.93.44.51.99.002) was launched at Baselworld 2014. As a follow-up to the prior year's "Dark Side of The Moon," the more versatile Grey Side surpassed its predecessor with its solid platinum dial, elaborate use of luminescent paint, and a less stark appearance. With the benefit of Omega's caliber 9300 automatic chronograph caliber, the Grey Side of the Moon is as robust on the inside as it is on the outside.
Additional Omega watch models mentioned include references 311.93.44.51.99.002, 310.32.42.50.01.001, 310.30.42.50.01.002, 310.32.42.50.01.002, 311.92.44.51.01.003, 311.30.40.30.01.001
