The Omega Seamaster is the eternal rival of the Rolex Submariner. But tonight, Tim Mosso recalls the time Omega gained the upper hand against the Rolex juggernaut. Tonight, Tim recalls the 1993 and 2018 Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Tantalum limited edition alongside a long roster of grail watches. This Omega dive watch fronts a collection of unimaginable luxury watches from the realm of fantasy. If you're a luxury watch collector, this show is for you!
2018 marked the 25th anniversary of the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M. The so-called "James Bond" Omega rose to fame on the wrist of Pierce Brosnan during his tenure as Agent 007. This model's enduring appeal spanned video games, multiple films, and even a change in casting as Daniel Craig was briefly associated with the model.
To mark a quarter century of the Seamaster Professional Diver 300M design, Omega recalled the "tri-tone" Seamaster Chronograph of 1993. The tri-tone Seamaster Chrono was primarily constructed of titanium but also included rose gold and ultra-scarce tantalum. While not a precious metal, tantalum is a mystifying blue material that frustrates all attempts to work and finish it. By including tantalum in its Seamaster Chronograph, Omega elevated itself into the ranks of companies such as Audemars Piguet, Gerald Genta, and Jaeger-LeCoultre, all of which have built watches using tantalum.
The 2018 Seamaster Diver 300M Tantalum features a 42mm case that's water resistant to 300 meters and equipped with a helium escape valve for saturation dives. It includes a unidirectional diving bezel with 120 clicks, a full tri-tone bracelet with diving extension, and an elaborately decorated dial made of solid titanium. Omega equips this model - as it does all Diver 300M - with automatic caliber 8800. This movement, which is a Master Chronometer (METAS), includes a co-axial escapement, anti-shock and antimagnetic features, and a power reserve of 55 hours.
The Omega Seamaster appears tonight with GRAIL watches from F.P. Journe, De Bethune, Vacheron Constantin, Parmigiani Fleurier, A. Lange & Sohne, and more!
All of this plus live discussion and watch collector wrist shots appears tonight on "Watches Tonight!"
