Watches Prices That Fall: Rolex, Patek Philippe, and How To Buy Watches in 2022
Watches Tonight with Tim Mosso

Tim Mosso understands that watch collectors are tired of paying premiums for new watches. In an era of easy money and crazy watch prices, it seems that every Rolex, Patek Philippe, or similar luxury watch quickly gains such inordinate value as to be unobtainable.
Perhaps the best value in 2022 Rolex watches is the celebrated but slow-selling Rolex Cellini Moonphase 50535. Originally launched at Baselworld 2017, the 39mm Everose rose gold dress watch caused a sensation. As the first new Rolex moonphase watch since the 1950s, the Cellini Moonphase was marked for great ness, and Rolex authorized dealers quickly found themselves with more orders than they could fill. For the first time in ages, Rolex dealers had a dress watch so hot that it was backordered.
But the relentless interest in Rolex sports watches like the Daytona, Submariner, and GMT-Master II quickly overtook the momentum of the Cellini Moonphase, and as of 2022, the dress complication can be bought used for less than its retail price of $26,750. Rolex Cellini Moonphase asking prices between $23,000 and $26,000 are common from preowned watch dealers, and real inventory is available for immediate delivery. Moreover, the 2022 Rolex rumor is that the Cellini collection soon will be contracted to include ONLY the Moonphase model. It's a sign of the times that even Rolex has trouble keeping watch collectors interested in dress watch models.
Make no mistake, the Cellini Moonphase is an outstanding luxury watch and an outstanding purchase opportunity for open-minded watch collectors. At 39mm, this Cellini is viable for both men and women. As a men's watch, the Rolex 50535 is compact, tidy, warm, and charming. Its red gold case and white lacquer dial offer just enough contrast, and the moonphase display itself is inspired. The disc of the moon is composed of blue enamel, and the moon itself is a small disc of Rolex meteorite iron. A radial date indicator with a "pointer date" hand in blue adds nuance and color to the dial.
Inside the Oyster-inspired case, Rolex manufacture caliber 3195 provides automatic winding of its 48-hour power reserve. The "Superlative Chronometer" meets the COSC Swiss chronometer standards, but Rolex tests the certified movement as a fully cased up watch in order to achieve precision of -2/+2 seconds per 24 hours.
Sometimes, excessive waiting lists at watch dealers lead watch buyers to give up out of frustration. Today, Tim lifts the veil on the best watches that still depreciate and offer superb preowned value. Major watch brands including Rolex and Omega still make luxury watches that can be purchased used for pennies on the dollar; elite haute horlogerie brands such as Patek Philippe and Parmigiani Fleurier manufacture models that can be bought at a significant discount compared to retail pricing.
Additional watches in tonight's show include the platinum Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738P-001, the stainless steel Parmigiani Tondagraph GT PFC906-0000140-B00182, and the steel tungsten hybrid Omega Constellation Globemaster 130.30.39.21.03.001.
All of this plus watch collector wrist shots will be featured in this episode of "Watches Tonight!"
