Rolex vs Omega: Tim Reviews and Compares Their Best Watches

Rolex versus Omega is the most exciting comparison in mainstream luxury watches. Rolex, the world's most famous luxury watch brand, presents an overwhelming challenge to nearly all rivals. However, Omega, the flagship of Swatch Group, is older and historically more dominant. Today, Tim Mosso compares Rolex watches to Omega watches for the enjoyment of our watch collector audience..
The Rolex Daytona 116500LN is the world's most famous chronograph. Created in 1963 and forever linked with endurance motorsports, the Daytona assumed legendary status with its 1988 redesign (16520) as a 40mm automatic chronometer, and the rest is history. Today, the famous Rolex "Cosmograph" is considered one of Rolex's "big three" watches alongside the Submariner dive watch and GMT Master II pilot's watch.
Each January, race car drivers at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona vie for the ultimate prize: a custom engraved Rolex Daytona watch. Each driver in each class-winning car wins the most coveted trophy in motorsports. With a Rolex manufacture caliber 4130, 100-meter water resistance, and evergreen style that defies age, the Rolex Daytona represents a formidable point of reference for other watch brands.
That said, the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch rivals both the longevity and gravitas of the Rolex Daytona. Originally launched in 1964 as the Omega Speedmaster Professional 105.012, the 42mm Speedmaster Professional emerged out of the NASA Apollo space program as the most famous aerospace and pilot's watch in history. Today's Omega Moonwatch (310.30.42.50.01.001) preserves all of the Speedy Pro's classic features while representing the most comprehensive redesign of the watch since 1968.
For 2021, Omega re-launched its Speedmaster Professional with a new movement, subtly redesigned dial and bezel, and a new nostalgia-inspired bracelet. The 42mm stainless steel case is largely untouched, but a new movement lies within. Omega caliber 3861 remains distantly based on the Lemania 1873, but upgrades include METAS Master Chronometer certification, a Co-Axial escapement, a longer power reserve, a silicon hairspring, and a free-sprung balance. Externally the bezel and case of the Omega Moonwatch have been tailored to resemble the Speedmaster 105.012 worn by Buzz Aldrin as the first wristwatch to walk on the Moon.
All of this plus watch collector wrist shots will be featured in this episode of "Watches Tonight!"
