Steel Watch Prices Explained: Cheap Omega Speedmaster & Expensive Rolex Daytonas

Stainless steel sports watches have become a fixation among watch collectors. Outrageous watch prices, dealer waiting lists, and marketplace scarcity have affected watches like the Rolex Daytona, Patek Philippe Nautilus, and Omega Speedmaster Professional. Tonight, Tim Mosso separates the facts from the hype surrounding the current market for stainless steel sports watches. If you are shopping for a watch or just want to know how to find the best prices on used watches, this show should be your first stop.
The 2021 Omega Speedmaster Professional represents a huge upgrade of the longstanding NASA issued Omega Moonwatch. Still 42mm in stainless steel and mounted on a full bracelet, the Speedmaster Professional now includes design refinements calculated to echo the famous Apollo-era Speedmasters of the late 1960s. Subtle changes to the dial, bezel, and bracelet echo the vintage Speedmaster 105.012, the first "Professional" model issued to astronauts. A new caliber 3861 adds Master Chronometer certification, a silicon hairspring, a longer 50-hour power reserve, hacking seconds, a co-axial escapement, and a free-sprung balance. This Omega Speedmaster Professional retails for $6,300 on a full bracelet, but it can be found preowned between $5,600 and 5,900.
The 2021 Patek Philippe Nautilus is a watch collector obsession. The Patek Nautilus 5711 will be discontinued after 2021, so the feeding frenzy may have a shelf life. Nevertheless, the blue dial 5711/1A-010 is trading for over $120,000 and the 2021 5711/1A-014 with the green dial has sold for well over $400,000 at auction; asking prices of over $500,000 have been confirmed. The 40mm stainless steel Nautilus is perhaps the single most outrageously inflated and hyped watch of the year. While vintage Patek Philippe Nautilus 3700 "Jumbo" models have achieve these kinds of auction results, deep six-figure prices for brand new steel 5711/1A models is unprecedented.
Peel away the hype, and the Patek Philippe 5711 remains a charming and versatile companion. At 8.5mm thick and 40mm in diameter, this a slim and elegant watch that can slip seamlessly into formal attire and strip down just as easily for the beach. With an automatic winding caliber 26-330 SC, plenty of dial lume, a full bracelet, and 120-meter water resistance, the Nautilus remains a rare combination of sporting capability and sartorial elegance.
The Rolex Daytona is the world's most sought chronograph. From its humble beginnings as an unpopular model in the 1960s and 1970s, the Daytona vaulted to stardom with its 1988 redesign. That basic 1988 design remains intact on the 2021 Rolex Daytona 116500LN. Still 40mm, stainless steel, automatic, and 100-meters water resistant, the Cosmograph Daytona has never been hotter than it is right now. The Rolex Daytona retails for $13,150 in stainless steel with ceramic bezel, but few buyers will be fortunate enough to purchase it at that price. Waiting lists at Rolex dealers reportedly stretch out to years, and used Rolex Daytona prices have surged past $40,000 for steel models.
All of this plus watch collector wrist shots will be featured in this episode of "Watches Tonight!"
