Rolex watches return to "Watches Tonight" as Tim Mosso recalls his favorite platinum luxury watches and why watch collectors should be shopping his short list in 2025. From the sporty Rolex Daytona to the elegant Day Date, these are watches built from the king of metals and the only metal worthy of a king: platinum!
The Rolex Daytona launched in 1963, and its 50th anniversary was a major event in 2013. While various retro re-editions and outlandish changes were mooted, the 50th Anniversary Rolex Daytona turned out to be trailblazing but subtle chronograph. With a 40mm platinum case and a chocolate ceramic bezel, the Rolex 116506 became the first platinum Rolex Daytona to reach series production. While several prototype 16506 Daytonas were built as gifts during the 1990s, the 2013 Daytona was a regular offering in the Rolex catalog - albeit at over $70,000.
The new platinum Cosmograph featured a time-honored Rolex tradition in the form of an "ice blue" dial reserved exclusively for platinum models from the world's most famous watchmaker. Additional chocolate brown details on the chronograph register keep the dial of the watch in color concert with the bezel. Although seldom purchased in its early days and often available on request at dealers, the Cosmograph Daytona 116506 became a sleeper hit late in life, and it lives on as the current Rolex 126506. Today, all versions of the platinum Rolex chronograph remain highly sought, and the once soft aftermarket for these models now sees all versions trading for tens of thousands of dollars above retail pricing. The most coveted trophy in motorsports remains one of the most coveted trophies off the track for watch collectors of all tastes.
