Today's selections from the WatchBox vault of preowned luxury watches are guided by one simple theme: automatic watches in all their forms. Tim Mosso and Brian Govberg showcase their favorite sports watches, dress watches, simple watches, and complications in a fast and fun format of 3x3 presentation.
Tim's watches include three choices at three disparate price points.
The Sinn U2 GMT (EZM5) is a dive watch with robust Sinn metallurgy; U-Boat steel with a tegimented bezel ensures scratch resistance even in extreme use. A Jaeger LeCoultre Amvox II ceramic-platinum limited edition of 300 includes both a GMT function and a tourbillon alongside automatic winding and a date display. Finally, the high horology Patek Philippe Gondolo 5033P is a rare combination of minute repeater and annual calendar; fewer than 80 were built from 2002 to 2012. The Sinn costs around $2,500; the JLC costs around $40,000, and the Patek Philippe costs around $300,000.
Brian's selections include complicated and simple selections from three major luxury watch brands. A Patek Philippe 5960/1A-010 annual calendar chronograph stuns with beauty, rarity, and versatility. This full-stainless steel example with black dial is part of a short-lived production run of roughly 7-9 months from the middle of 2017 to the beginning of 2018; the black dial Patek 5960/1A already is an investment-grade legend among watch collectors. An inverse-panda dial IWC Portuguese Chronograph Automatic -- reference 3714 -- showcases an attractive variant of IWC's most popular Portuguese model of all time. Finally, Brian selects the time-only Zenith Pilot Type 20 in bronze to prove that watch enthusiasts can have high-flying fun with a 40mm case and a reliable Zenith Elite automatic caliber.
