Is The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Too Expensive?

Watches Tonight and Tim Mosso return with a new format and more luxury watches than ever. This episode focuses on the iconic Blancpain Fifty Fathoms dive watch and whether Blacnpain's pricing strategy has priced it out of the market altogether.
Back in 2023, the inevitable redesign of the core Blancpain Fifty Fathoms dive watch was among the most anticipated releases of the year. Everyone knew a smaller case was coming, and excess size was, in theory, the one shortcoming of the previous 45mm reference 5015.
Everyone – so the prevailing wisdom held – would lunge for the expected regular production 42mm watch when it landed. It was almost a foregone conclusion that the smaller Fifty would be a best-seller. This, in turn, would allow the Fifty Fathoms to compete directly against the now larger – and industry standard – 41mm Rolex Submariner and offer an haute horlogerie alternative to Blancpain’s local rival, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver.
It didn’t work out that way. Today, we hold a virtual roundtable on-set and online to ask why. See it all tonight on "Watches Tonight!"
