Omega Speedmasters and the Rolex Daytona are among the best chronograph watches to buy in 2023. Whether you enjoy the lore of aviation, space flight, motorsports, or just driving, there's a chronograph watch for you in tonight's show. This episode is a buyer's guide that features the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, the Omega Speedmaster Mark II Racing, and the new for 2023 Rolex Daytona among many other chronographs.
The 2023 Rolex Daytona is an evolution of the 50th anniversary platinum Daytona 116506. Newly christened with reference 126506, the 2023 platinum Daytona is the 60th anniversary model that Rolex collectors expected. Still 40mm in diameter and graced with an exclusive Rolex "ice blue" dial, the Cosmograph Daytona debuts Rolex's first sapphire caseback for an automatic watch.
Although the Rolex Cellini Prince first featured a display caseback in the 2000s, no automatic winding Rolex watch has featured such a sapphire window until the 2023 Daytona. To further distinguish the new platinum Rolex Daytona, it will be the only watch in the Cosmograph Daytona collection that employs a display caseback. Rolex has created an new caliber 4131 with additional finishing refinements created with a display caseback in mind. Changes include cotes de Geneve, pivot jewels in golden chatons, and a new winding rotor designed to be seen.
Naturally, all of this refinement carries a premium price, and the 2023 Rolex Daytona 60th Anniversary in platinum has a retail price of over $75,000.
The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch (310.30.42.50.01.001) builds on more than half a century of space flight experience. New for 2021, the Speedmaster Professional continues its service to NASA astronauts with its first-ever Master Chronometer Moonwatch caliber 3861. Now a co-axial METAS chronometer, the Lemania-based manual wind chronograph also gains a free-sprung balance, silicon hairspring, and additional power reserve for a total of 50 hours.
While not new to market, the Omega Speedmaster Mark II Racing Dial remains a cult classic among collectors of Omega watches. Originally launched as Omega reference 145.014, the Speedmaster "racing" was reborn as the 2014 Omega Speedmaster Mark II Co-Axial Chronometer Chronograph (327.10.43.50.06.001). The "racing" dial comprises a distinctive combination of red, orange, and white calibrations with a staggered "racing" pattern that resembles the checkered flag which marks the end of motor races.
Major upgrades to the 2014 Speedmaster Racing include an Omega caliber 3330 based on the time-tested Valjoux 7750. Unlike the 1969 original, the modern Mark II winds automatically, packs a column wheel chronograph, a co-axial escapement, a silicon hairspring, and a COSC Swiss chronometer certification. For additional durability, a modern 100-meter water resistance rating is included.
Other watches discussed in tonight's show include the Montblanc 1858 Minerva Monopusher Chronograph Red Arrow, H Moser & Cie Streamliner Chronograph Flyback, Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Chronograph Flyback, Breitling Aerospace Evo, Patek Philippe 5172G, and the Girard Perregaux R&D 01 chronograph for motorsports. Relevant additional Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch include 310.32.42.50.01.002, 310.30.42.50.01.002, and 310.32.42.50.01.001. Additional relevant Rolex Daytona references include 126500, 126505, 126508, 126509, 126518, 126519, 126515.
