$5,000 luxury watches once were the top of the market. In 2023 watches priced at $5,000 and under are considered to be budget alternatives to expensive watches from Rolex, Patek Philippe, and even Omega. From the Tudor Black Bay GMT to the Grand Seiko Quartz SBGP017 to the Oris ProPilot X, watch collectors with mortal budgets will find that some of the best watches for less than $5,000 happen to rank among the best watches available at any price!
The 2023 Tudor Black Bay GMT (references M79830RB-0010 and M79830RB-0012) is a 42mm Swiss dual time watch with Rolex family pedigree and a Tudor watch price. Based on the 2018 Black Bay GMT and the quasi-mythical white dial 1950s Rolex GMT Master 6542 "Pan Am Executive," the new white dial Tudor Black Bay GMT is a familiar face with an albino twist.
This stainless steel GMT watch offers two independent time zones: local time in a 12-hour format, and 24-hour reference time. A Tudor manufacture caliber MT5652 features automatic winding, a COSC Swiss chronometer certification, a three-day power reserve, and antimagnetic qualities. As part of the Black Bay aquatic watch family, the 2023 Black Bay GMT boasts 200-meter water resistance.
For 2022, Grand Seiko released the Heritage Collection 44GS 55th Anniversary limited edition of 2000 pieces. Better known as the Grand Seiko SBGP017, this 40mm stainless steel Japanese watch features the company's superb caliber 9F85 quartz movement. With thermocompensation, a hand-selected quartz oscillator, and a quartz trimmer system, the Grand Seiko 9F85 boasts accuracy of +/- 5 seconds per year.
Compare that rate to standard quartz watches, which average 15 seconds of error per month. A blue "Iwao" textured dial evokes the morning clouds above Grand Seiko's Shinshu watch studio. Finally both the case and dial include extensive hand finishing by Grand Seiko artisans. 100-meter water resistance is an unexpected benefit of robust construction on this elegant dress watch.
Oris of Hölstein offers outstanding value in luxury watches, but the 2023 Oris ProPilot Calibre 400 is a standout even by the company's standards. Launched in 2022, the 39mm titanium ProPilot X gains a unique "Kermit" green dial inspired the Kermit the Frog of the Muppets (reference 01-400-7778-7157).
All versions of the ProPilot X besides the $4,600 Kermit have a retail price of $4,300. This includes the signature calibre 400 with automatic winding, a five-day power reserve, antimagnetic resistance to 2,250 gauss, and a ten-year power reserve. The versatile ProPilot X includes 100-meter water resistance, an integrated titanium bracelet, and dial color options including Kermit green, red, blue, and grey.
