Tim Mosso knows that not all luxury watch buyers have $50,000 ready to commit to a single watch. And even when a collector does have that much money, value still matters. Tonight, Tim discusses the best watches available for $5,000 or less in the 2025 marketplace. Top brands including Longines, Mido, Otsuka Lotec and more feature in this discussion of the best luxury watches for $5,000 or less.
Watchmaker Jiro Katayama of Otsuka Lotec started as an industrial designer - a path similar to Armand Billard (Sartory-Billard), Benoit Mintiens (Ressence), and Morten Linde (Linde Werdelin. From his shop in Otsuka, Tokyo, Katayama has been building "low tech" (get it?) mechanical watches since 2008. The Otsuka Lotec NO.6, originally launched in 2015, had already become a quiet sensation prior to being updated and named GPHG Challenge Prize winner for 2024. Only available in Japan - and then mostly by lottery - the Otsuka Lotec No.6 has become so coveted abroad that examples sell for up to five figures in U.S. dollars when they become available outside of Japan. Inspired by gauges and meters, the Otsuka Lotec No.6 looks remarkably original, sophisticated, and refined for a product that sells new for less than $3,000 U.S.
The Longines Master Collection can be considered a budget alternative to Jaeger LeCoultre's - far more expensive - Master Collection. Back in 2022, Longines launched the Longines Master 190th Anniversary series in 40mm, and the essential design remains in the collection as the Longines Master L2.843.4.63.2 in 38.5mm. With classical styling, a mechanically engraved charcoal dial, and rose gold numerals, this is an enduringly beautiful dress watch that looks multiples of its retail price of $2,500.
Tudor watches have become renowned for vintage style and value since the brand's international relaunch in the early 2010s. The Black Bay 58 925 arrived in 2021 as the least expected dive watch of the year. Its sterling silver case caught watch buyers off guard since the precious metal had been out of favor since the rise of stainless steel in the 1920s and 1930s. But the 39mm Black Bay 58 925 is anything but a gimmick; it's a genuine 200-meter dive watch that happens to be made of silver. The exclusive Tudor Kenissi caliber MT5400 provides three days of power reserve, COSC chronometer-level accuracy, and robust construction. Taupe colored bezel and dial are an exclusive in the watch industry or close to it. The aesthetic is completely unique and distinctively Tudor.
