The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is the most famous chronograph in the world. It's also Omega's iconic watch and cornerstone for collectors of the brand. But even Speedmasters come in many forms, and Tim Mosso has assembled his top ten Omega Speedmasters, Seamasters and more from the last ten years of watchmaking. This show features to top ten Omega watches of the last ten years.
The Omega Moonswatch was a hit and a controversy all in one. From a success standpoint, the Omega X Swatch MoonSwatch Speedmaster Chronographs were blockbusters. Buyers lined up at Swatch stores with numbers and intensity not seen since the early 1990s heyday of the Swatch watch brand. At $260 and clearly fabricated from plastic, the Moonswatch is not a luxury watch. The quartz powered chronograph - available in several colors or "mission" - sold so well that roughly 1 in 16 Swiss watches exported in 2022 was a Moonswatch.
Fans and collectors argue that the Moonswatch introduced Omega watches to a younger audience and pushed back the tide of smart watches that have been eroding entry-level Swiss watch production. Critics argued that it damaged the Omega brand and encouraged young people to become watch flippers. Tonight, Tim will discuss both perspectives and poll the live audience about its opinion.
On the luxury end of the spectrum, the Omega Speedmaster Caliber 321 (reference 311.30.40.30.01.001) was a true luxury watch hit for Omega. Launched in 2020, the 39.7mm steel Speedmaster Caliber 321 is a faithful re-edition of the Omega Speedmaster 105.003 used by American astronaut Ed White during his pioneering space walk on June 3, 1965. The revival of column wheel chronograph caliber 321 answered the decades-long prayers of Omega watch collectors. Although priced at $15,400, the Speedmaster Caliber 321 remains so popular that dealers maintain waiting lists four years after the debut of the watch.
If you have ever considered buying a luxury watch, this buyer's guide is for you!
