As we gear up for the holidays we’re taking extra measures to ensure the health and safety of our extended WatchBox family. Mike is indeed back in Philly; but with a smaller – and more distanced – crew working out of the office.

That being said, the episode kicks off as it always does, with three pieces that recently hit our inventory – each impressive in its own right. First up is the distinctive Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar in black ceramic, followed by the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar; Ref. 5035G. This was the original reference to feature the annual calendar complication, and we’re always excited when one arrives in our inventory. The final new arrival is a Rolex Daytona (116518LN)
on the incredibly comfortable Oysterflex bracelet, designed with a bold black dial with champagne subdials.

For our main topics today, Mike dials in on holiday gifting and the watch high atop his wife’s wish list, highlights from the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, and Phillips’ upcoming New York auction where Paul Newman’s “other” Daytona is coming up for sale. Often (within the watch community) referred to as the “Oscars of Watchmaking,” the GPHG awards ceremony took place earlier this month, and several of Mike’s favorite 2020 introductions took home prestigious awards. Piaget was awarded the “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix for its Altiplano Ultimate Concept, Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin Skeleton was awarded the Calendar and Astronomy prize, and H. Moser’s Streamliner Flyback Chronograph took home the prize for the Chronograph. We’re enamored with the caseback view of the Streamliner…what are your thoughts?

In closing, Mike highlights several models WatchBox is looking to acquire for inventory, and more than one iteration of the Daytona is on the list this week. Daytonas with unique stone dials have caught our attention, and we are interested in versions with meteorite, grossular, and sodalite dials among other special materials. Daytonas on Oysterflex bracelets in all metals and configurations make the list, as does the Daytona 116520, which debuted in 2000 and was a coveted piece in Rolex’s collection until its “retirement” in 2016.
