Tim Mosso reviews 2021 new watches from Grand Seiko and Panerai while reflecting on the soon-to-be-discontinued Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711. In a model year when watch shows no longer exist, Grand Seiko has launched its 2021 SLGH005 "White Birch" dial in a handsome 40mm case. Panerai chooses to go upmarket with its platinum Luminor Marina Platinumtech PAM 1116. And with the Nautilus automatic's sunset looming, Tim delivers and epitaph for the famous Patek Philippe 5711. All of this and watch collector wrist shots are featured tonight on "Watches Tonight."
The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A was launched in 2006, but most of its production life passed in the background of a watch industry dominated by Rolex sports watches and dress watches like Patek's own Calatrava line.
Despite a handsome 40mm steel case, fair pricing, and a rugged versatility, the Nautilus 5711 never reached the level of a market phenomenon or mainstream status symbol -- at least, not until 2018. At that point, used Nautilus prices went absolutely nuts, and a watch that used to sell for around $20,000 used became an $80,000 preowned watch by 2020. Patek Philippe evidently saw enough, because company leader Thierry Stern in early 2021 declared the end of the 5711 to be imminent.
What is the legacy of this watch, and how should watch collectors remember this generation of the Nautilus. And is it possible that other Nautilus models like the 5712 and the 5726 will become the new fixations? What about the Aquanaut line? Tim shares his thoughts on the present and future of Patek Philippe sports watches after the 5711.
2021 watches won't arrive at Baselworld or SIHH. But Grand Seiko and Panerai are releasing new models direct to media and watch enthusiasts on the Internet. The 2021 Grand Seiko SLGH005 Hi-Beat Automatic -- nicknamed "White Birch" -- is a continuation of the tradition first launched with the famous Grand Seiko "Snowflake." A deeply grooved and undulating silver-white dial references the white birch tree bark around Grand Seiko's Shizukuishi watchmaking studios in northern Japan. A next-generation Grand Seiko Hi-Beat automatic caliber 9SA5 provides improved durability and greater power reserve than prior models. But is the $9,100 retail price too high? Tim discusses this and our audience's reaction to the watch.
Panerai collectors once were considered the most committed, loyal, and intense of all major brand watch buyers. That hasn't been the case for at least fifteen years. So who is Panerai's target customer in 2021, and does the new Panerai Luminor Marina Platinumtech PAM 1116 appeal to that person? At $36,900, this is an exorbitantly priced 70-piece limited edition watch with a platinum case, a sunburst green dial, and an eye-raising 70-year warranty? Is this watch a halo model designed to draw interest in lower-priced Panerai watches, or is it a shot in the dark by a marketing team that no longer knows its target buyer?
All of this and your watch collector wrist shots are in store on tonight's show!
